Snow, Cold No Conditions for Baseball
Nobody wanted to play Game 3 tonight.
I read a great quote by Jim Tracy, which I think summed up today’s weather pretty perfectly. He said the first two games of this series have been great. They’ve been well played. The players played well. The managers made good decisions. You don’t want to have a game like we had last year in the World Series, when Jimmy Rollins is missing a pop up and the Rays are tying the game in terrible conditions. You don’t want to make that mistake again. I think they did the right thing. And I think it works out well for us in terms of pitching.
It’s still going to be cold tomorrow night, but it’s not going to be as cold as it is today. Honestly, I don’t think the guys in the bullpen should complain a whole lot about the weather. We get to sit down there with a heater. Shane Victorino is going to be frigid. Jayson Werth is going to be cold. Everybody is going to be cold. We’ll be fine back there with the heater. So I hope tomorrow night the weather won’t be as much of a factor. Guys are going to come to play. I mean, if you get jammed on a ball it’s going to hurt, but I don’t think anybody is going to complain about the weather. You have to play through it. We’re at the most special part of the season.
The only thing I don’t like right now is the start time. That’s bad, but that’s the time most people can watch. Well, it’s the time most people in Denver can watch. I think Phillies fans are getting the short end of the stick. And I think Rockies fans would rather come to an earlier game, which would allow more Phillies fans to watch the game, too. That’s what bothers players — when kids can’t watch the games. My kids couldn’t stay up to watch the World Series games last year. They fell asleep in the stands. We understand we need to play the games at the optimal times for viewers, but it still stinks because the games are supposed to be about the kids.

Hey, Scott! Glad to see you’re doing the player blog this year. Yeah, the start times seem a bit wacky, especially since it’s bound to be a little warmer in Colorado with the sun shining. At least Monday’s game will probably be during the day, since you guys will have to travel. Living on the West Coast and working freelance, I get to rearrange my schedule to accommodate my Phils obsession. Switched a client from Monday to today so I won’t have any conflict for the game. I’m am every inning of every game kind of fan. That’s just how roll. I already have tickets to two NLCS games, and I am certainly hoping to see you guys out here in Sunny LA late next week. You know, those late games are hard on us big kids too! I plan on taking a nice long nap today since 10 p.m. is my regular bedtime. I didn’t even bother to get tix for Game 5 in Philly…I’m not gonna need ’em. See ya in Philly for game 2 of the NLCS.

Just wanted to wish you and the rest of the Phillies the best of luck! I know that these are really hard conditions to play in. I grew up in Maine and had to play many softball games in this kind of weather. Also thanks for stepping up to the plate and pitching, and pitching very well, when called upon. It must be quite difficult pitching when injured. So thank you! All us Phillies Phans will be watching you guys tonite! Go Phillies!
Thanks Scott for a great effort getting out of the jam in game 2. I doubt the Phillies would have made it this far without the “damage control” you’ve been executing all year.
I’m with you on the start times. It’s Sunday! Start the game a 1:05pm (Isn’t that in Bible? “…and God said play baseball at 1:05 on Sundays). Give you guys a little bit of warmth, and that’ll still give the folks in Philly a 3pm game, which should be plenty of time to for people to get back from church, let their hangover’s wear off a bit or both 🙂
And Monday? Start that game at 7:05 Rocky time! Preferable 6:05. Thats the last thing I need right now, watching a baseball game a 1am Tuesday morning.

Scott-Thanks for the great job you’ve done so far this season. I agree with the others, the time for the game tonight is bad. We’ll be watching though and hoping that Happ brings his good stuff. Go, Phils!

I totally agree with you about the starting times for these games. I have to get up early for work in the morning, but we will be watching tonight anyway. I feel bad for you guys, you have to play late, then again Monday then travel home and play again with no break. (If you don’t win it all in Colorado).

Hey Scott, I appreciate you taking the fans perspective in regards to the lousy start times. You mentioned last year’s games, great point. The TV ratings for last year’s WS was awful because of the west coast viewers not watching. Am I nuts or aren’t the networks trying to include viewers on the west coast by making these start times? Let’s be honest: the only people they should have cared about are the people in the east since that’s where the two teams were from. But we all know that will never happen. Once again this year the networks dictate times without regard for fans. Yankee and Dodger fans get decent times. Who won the WS last year anyway? Why don’t the Phillies get any respect in that regard? We’re not NYC or LA, that’s why.
